1. Choose the Right Time of Day
Lighting can make or break a photo session, and the best light happens about an hour before sunset—what photographers call golden hour. The sun is low in the sky, everything looks softer and warmer, and it creates that dreamy glow you see in magazine-style portraits.
That’s why I schedule most of my high school senior sessions in Williamsburg during golden hour. It’s flattering, natural, and just looks good on everyone.
If you’re planning a session, aim for late afternoon into early evening. Trust me—it’s worth working around the light.
2. Bring Multiple Outfits (But Keep It Simple)
Most seniors want a few different looks for their session—something casual, something a little more dressed up, maybe something that reflects a hobby or future plans. And that’s great! Just keep in mind that too many outfit changes can eat into your session time and slow the momentum.
I always recommend 2–3 outfits max. Choose things that feel like you and that you feel confident wearing. Solid colors, simple textures, and layers always photograph well.
And a quick bonus tip? Avoid logos, super bright neon colors, and clothes that constantly need adjusting. You want to feel comfortable and focused on having fun—not fiddling with your top between every shot.
3. Relax—It Doesn’t Have to Feel Awkward
Not everyone feels natural in front of the camera, and that’s totally normal. The good news is: you don’t have to know how to pose or fake a perfect smile. That’s my job.
